Tony Perkins: Trump Keeping 'Merry Christmas' Vow

President Donald Trump will follow through on his campaign promise to use the phrase "Merry Christmas" over "Happy Holidays" in his festive greetings, according to Tony Perkins.

Perkins, who heads the Family Research Council, appeared on Fox News' "The Story with Martha MacCallum" Thursday night, where he noted that the official White House Christmas card has the phrase "Merry Christmas" on the front, a departure from previous years.

"This is about a lot more than just some assault on Santa Claus once a year. This is about an ongoing attack on religious freedom in the public square," Perkins said, adding that Trump understands and is prepared to fight back.

"So the president coming to the forefront and saying, 'Look, we're going to say Merry Christmas again,' it is a signal to say, 'You know what, it's OK to express yourself on religious issues in our culture,'" he said. "This is a breath of fresh air. And this is how the president is using the 'bully pulpit' to restore freedom in the country again."

Trump previously used the phrase as president in a tweet on Nov. 30.
