President Donald Trump’s foreign policy views aren’t in alignment with those of the Republican Party — and won’t be good for America, Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., said Sunday.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Toomey said the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis in the wake of the president’s decision to pull out US troops in Syria was disturbing.
“Gen. Mattis has put his finger on where the president has views that are very distinct from the vast majority of Republicans and probably Democrats, elected and unelected,” he said.
“I think the president does not share my view that the Pax-Americana of the post-war era has been enormously good for America.”
According to Toomey, those foreign policy views are “so divergent” — and will be affecting Toomey’s consideration of whomever Trump nominates as his next leader of the Pentagon.
“I’m going to be looking for a Defense Secretary that shares a more traditional view about America’s role in the world,” he asserted.
