Retiring GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy ridicules Congress as “incapable” of conducting investigations, with panels in both chambers that “leak like the Gossip Girls.”
In remarks on CBS News’ “Face The Nation” aired Sunday, the South Carolina lawmaker and former federal prosecutor said he’s “glad we have an independent ball-and-strike caller" in special counsel Robert Mueller.
"Serious investigations don't make up their mind first, and then go in search of the evidence to validate your previously held conviction," said Gowdy, who headed the House Select Committee on Benghazi, which uncovered Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct State Department business.
“Congressional investigations leak like the Gossip Girls,” said Gowdy, who now is a member of the House Intelligence Committee headed by Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif.
"I mean, they're terrible, and I would be telling you that if I were staying in Congress, they are just not serious," Gowdy said, adding: “Serious investigations don't leak."
Pressed on whether the House intel panel made up its mind before its conclusion that there was no collusion between President Donald Trump or his campaign and Russia, Gowdy attacked the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California.
“Adam Schiff in March of 2017 [said] he had evidence, more than circumstantial, but not direct” of collusion, Gowdy said.
“We’ve been waiting for over a month — for over a year now for him to produce that evidence,” he added. “That is not serious and I'm hoping that either the Senate investigation or Mueller will be more objective.”
