President Donald Trump has privately expressed an openness to the idea of raising the age limits to purchase the types of guns used by the teenaged mass murderer last week in Florida, Axios reports.
Trump has said privately that he doesn't think high school kids should be allowed to buy guns, Axios reports.
Federal law sets the age to buy a handgun at 21 but any type of long gun, including the sporting rifle like the one used last week, at 18. That may vary in some states, but Trump is considering making it 21 across the board, Axios reported.
"We have to do something. We've got kids dying," Trump has said privately, Axios reports.
The White House on Tuesday indicated new age limits could be up for debate.
"I think that's certainly something that's on the table for us to discuss, and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks," Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday.
Trump has moved to ban the bump stock devices that convert semi-automatic weapons to shoot like fully-automatic ones — like the one used in the Las Vegas massacre — and he is touting increased background checks.
