President Donald Trump on Sunday issued a statement about his controversial executive order on extreme vetting, urging Americans that his ban is not a "Muslim ban" and that the country would continue showing "compassion to those fleeing oppression."
"This is not about religion – this is about terror and keeping our country safe," Trump said as protests to the order continued to rage on around the country, including one in front of the White House.
ABC News first tweeted the president’s statement.
Trump on Friday signed an executive order banning people from seven countries with ties to Islamic radicalism from entering the U.S. for at least 90 days. Those countries include Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The order also suspended the refugee admissions program into the U.S. for 120 days, halted indefinitely the entry of Syrian refugees and implemented new screening standards for all immigration programs.
