Right as Bernie Sanders began his speech Monday night at the Democratic National Convention, Donald Trump set out to remind supporters of the "four most damaging emails from DNC leak."
Culling from an
ABC News article, Trump points out four emails that are particularly insulting to the senator from Vermont, according to
Politico.
Among the four was one in which soon-to-be former DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called Jeff Weaver, Sanders' campaign manager, an "ass"and a "damn liar" for denying that any violence occurred at a tumultuous Nevada Democratic State Convention.
In another, operatives float an idea to brand Sanders as an atheist, which he has denied.
"It may make no difference but for KY and WA can we get someone to ask his belief," Brad Marshall, the DNC's chief financial officer, wrote on May 5. "He had skated on having a Jewish heritage. I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist."
DNC staffers also considered constructing a media narrative of Sanders' "disorganized" campaign, which was vetoed, according to National Communication Director Luis Miranda, who said "the chair has been advised not to engage. So we'll have to leave it alone."
The fourth email came from Wasserman Schultz, who complained that Sanders' accusation that the DNC worked to thwart his campaign was "spoken like someone who has never been a member of the Democratic Party and has no understanding of what we do."
Despite the emails, Sanders and his team remain committed to helping Hillary Clinton.
Appearing on
CNN Monday, Weaver said: "This happened, we knew it happened then. Now is the time to go forward."
"Now is the time to elect Hillary Clinton and defeat Donald Trump."
