President Donald Trump Thursday poked at the continued fallout over his firing of FBI Director James Comey – saying on Twitter that "Russia must be laughing up their sleeves watching as the U.S. tears itself apart over a Democrat excuse for losing the election."

Here's the president's tweet:

President Trump fired Comey Tuesday – telling NBC News Thursday that the former FBI director was "a showboat" – as the agency continues his investigation into Russian meddling in the November election.

Democrats have slammed Trump's action – and the president has fired back by noting that they had called for Comey's ouster after he reopened the Hillary Clinton email probe less than two weeks before Election Day.

President Trump also has come under fire for Wednesday's meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Kislyak is at the center of the investigation of possible ties between Trump campaign officials and Moscow.

In February, Michael Flynn was fired as national security adviser over concerns that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence about his previous conversations with Kislyak.
