Key Democratic Party donor Tom Steyer is calling on lawmakers to begin an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, saying that already, the facts "exceed standards for presidential impeachment for obstruction of justice" drafted against Presidents Richard Nixon in 1974 and Bill Clinton in 1998.

In his letter to Congress, published through Medium, Friday, Steyer, whose superPAC NextGen Climate Action spent about $100 million in the 2016 election, said the "clear and undisputed" facts being exposed call for an "immediate impeachment inqury" by the House.

Many Democratic lawmakers are avoiding talk of impeachment against Trump, who has been in office short of six months, notes The Hill.

But Reps. Al Green, D-Texas and Brad Sherman, D-Calif., announced on Wednesday — a day before fired FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee — that they were drafting articles of impeachment against Trump.

Steyer noted in his letter, published on Friday, that Comey's declaration that Trump lied about his firing, and because he raised questions about Trump's efforts to impede the FBI's investigation into Russian collusion, "these questions require immediate investigation by an independent commission free of Trump's interference."

The environmentalist also insisted that there are several "clear and undisputed facts' that demand an immediate inquiry:

  • While running for office, the president of the United States publicly asked Russia to reveal his opponent's email correspondence.
  • Russia successfully interfered in our presidential election with the intent of helping Trump, by hacking the computer systems of his opponent
  • The president's closest associates, including his Attorney General, former National Security Adviser, and son-in-law have made false claims under oath during background checks and confirmation hearings about their contacts with agents of the Russian government
  • The President has said on national television that he fired the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of the FBI's investigation of Russian electoral interference.

There are other recent revelations, including reports in The Washington Post  that Trump asked Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats, while in the presence of CIA Director Mike Pompeo, to impede the FBI's investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, said Steyer.

"We must demand answers to many grave questions arising from this crisis, but the most urgent is this: How are Congressional Republicans going to hold to account a president whose efforts to obstruct an FBI investigation clearly meet the standards for impeachment articulated by Congressional Republicans fewer than twenty years ago?" concluded Steyer.
