Some House Democrats are not rushing to support calls to impeach Donald Trump and are concerned the move to begin proceedings against the president could improve his chances of re-election and hurt their own, The Washington Post is reporting.
Rep. Jeff Van Drew, D-N.J., said he was caught off guard by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who launched the official impeachment inquiry targeting Trump.
"I don't get surprised often," the freshman congressmen said. "But really, truly, I just was like, 'Wow.' It happened so quickly."
And he added: "I wish we waited a little longer."
Van Drew said he was underwhelmed by the rough transcript of the call in which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work with Attorney General William Barr and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, according to the Post.
The newspaper noted that several dozen Democrats have yet to endorse the impeachment inquiry. Some continue to have reservations and fear impeachment will help Trump's re-election chances while imperiling their own, the Post said.
Rep. Anthony Brindisi, D-N.Y., said he had no plans to back impeachment anytime soon.
"I have 20 people as we speak standing outside my office at a pro-Trump, anti-impeachment rally in Utica, and I have dozens of phone calls into my office today from people saying 'impeach Trump,'" he said.
"I'm going to try to get to the bottom of all this because I think the American people deserve the facts and I want to know what happened here."
