Sen. Graham Says Trump Told Iran: 'There's a New Sheriff in Town'

President Donald Trump's warning to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, though controversial, garnered praise from sometime critic Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Most Republicans have stayed silent on Iran following Trump's all-caps tweet warning the terrorist nation against threatening the U.S. again, but Graham came out in support of Trump for taking a tough stance.

"The Trump doctrine when it comes to Iran was the Reagan doctrine when it came to the Soviets," Graham, R-S.C., said on Fox News on Monday night.

He added that Trump "is letting the Iranian president know there's a new sheriff in town."

According to Axios, Graham is preparing to introduce a resolution declaring support for the Iranian people, which he thinks will find broad bipartisan backing.

"We're all going on record to say we stand with you in your desire to determine your own destiny, pick your own leaders, express yourself, and live in peace with your neighbors," he said.

"This is a moment in history."
