President Donald Trump told a Las Vegas crowd that he may have found a more important job than collecting taxes for IRS employees hired under the Biden administration.
During a speech Saturday at Circa Resort & Casino, Trump was discussing his plan for no taxes on tips when he mentioned the nearly 90,000 IRS agents hired under former President Joe Biden.
"They hired, or tried to hire, 88,000 new workers to go after you and we’re in the process of developing a plan to either terminate all of them, or maybe we’ll move them to the border," he said during a rally at Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
"I think we’re going to move them to the border where they are allowed to carry guns. You know, they’re so strong on guns. But these people are allowed to carry guns. So, we will probably move them to the border."
Soon after being sworn in on Monday, Trump signed an executive order that implemented a hiring freeze on new government employees.
Although the freeze for most agencies expires in 90 days, at which time the Office of Management and Budget is expected to submit a plan to reduce the federal workforce through efficiency and attrition, the IRS hiring freeze will remain in place until such time that the Treasury secretary determines "it is in the national interest to lift the freeze."
Shortly before taking office, Trump announced the creation of a new government entity on Tuesday designed to collect the tariffs and duties coming in from "foreign sources."
"For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through soft and pathetically weak Trade agreements, the American Economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the World, while taxing ourselves. It is time for that to change. I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
In January 2023, the GOP-led House passed a bill clawing back the nearly $80 billion that was to be used to expand the IRS through the hiring of some 87,000 new agents. With Biden and a Democrat-led Senate at the time, there was no chance of the legislation being enacted.
