President Donald Trump on Tuesday praised John Kelly, tweeting that his chief of staff is doing a "fantastic job" despite "fake reporting" that makes it more difficult.
The tweet comes amid reports of rancor stemming from last week's immigration meeting, during which Kelly told Hispanic Democrats that Trump's position on immigration had "evolved" from his campaign, a time when he was "uninformed."
It led to a Trump tweet that seemed to rebuke Kelly, and privately Trump has been referring to his second chief of staff as "another nut job here who thinks he's running things," Vanity Fair reported.
The first "nut job" being Steve Bannon.
"The more Kelly plays up that he's being the adult in the room — that it's basically combat duty and he's serving the country — that kind of thing drives Trump nuts," a Republican close to the White House told Vanity Fair.
Ivanka Trump has been spearheading efforts to find a replacement for Kelly, though Vanity Fair reports that no move is imminent.
