President Donald Trump is diving right into British politics ahead of his Monday visit to London, telling a U.K. publication that Boris Johnson would be an “excellent” choice for prime minister.
In an interview with The Sun posted Friday, Trump spoke glowingly of London’s former mayor — and said other PM contenders have sought his endorsement.
“I actually have studied it very hard. I know the different players,” said Trump, who gave the interview in the Oval Office ahead of his travels Monday to London. “But I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent.”
Current PM Theresa May said she’ll step down June 7 after failing to garner support for her Brexit plan.
“I like him. I have always liked him,” he added. “I don’t know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person. He has been very positive about me and our country.”
Johnson earlier this week was ordered to appear in court over allegations he lied about Brexit by stating Britain would be 350 million pounds a week better off outside the European Union. He was a central and controversial part of the Leave campaign's successful “take back control” message ahead of the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Trump told The Sun “other people have asked me for an endorsement, too,” declining to name the suitors.
“I could help anybody if I endorse them. I mean, we’ve had endorsement where they have gone up for 40, 50 points at a shot,” he boasted. “Now that is [in the United States], but I understand over there would be a great endorsement.”
