Democrats in North Carolina will use targeted mobile ads during this weekend's college football games to remind people about former President Donald Trump's endorsement of GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, whose campaign has been hit by scandal after reports about his alleged online activities.
The advertisements will be used at the stadiums at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in its game against Duke University and at North Carolina State University, which is squaring off against Northern Illinois University, reports The Hill.
They'll showcase Trump's comments about Robinson, the state's lieutenant governor, including when he praised him as being like the late civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. "on steroids."
The campaign approach has been organized by the Democratic National Committee one week after CNN alleged in a report that Robinson proclaimed himself as a "black Nazi" and posted other strongly worded racial and sexual comments online message boards, a claim he has strongly denied.
A dozen staff members on his campaign or in his lieutenant governor's office have resigned after the report surfaced.
"While North Carolinians gather to watch the state's most notorious sports rivalry, Democrats will be reminding spectators of one of the state's most notorious partnerships: Mark Robinson and Donald Trump," DNC spokesperson Kenny Palmer said.
Palmer added that the ads are being used to "sack extremism in North Carolina," by urging state voters to reject Trump and Robinson at the ballot box in November.
Robinson is running for governor against Democrat gubernatorial nominee Josh Stein, the current North Carolina attorney general. Incumbent Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is not seeking reelection because of term limits.
Trump has not referred to Robinson in his speeches this past week, but he also has not retracted his endorsement.
Robinson did not attend the former president's rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, last weekend.
Meanwhile, the lieutenant governor was treated at a Mount Airy, North Carolina, hospital Friday night after he received second-degree burns while making a campaign appearance at the Mayberry Truck Show in Mount Airy, according to campaign spokesperson Mike Lonergan.
