President Donald Trump spoke to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on the phone before criticizing him on Twitter Wednesday, The New York Times reports.
The Times cites a person who knows about the call as saying Trump talked to McConnell about his comments this week in which he said Trump is new to politics and does not understand the timeline of getting things accomplished in Washington.
"Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before," McConnell said. "I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process."
Trump fired back with a tweet Wednesday afternoon, but first he reportedly expressed his distaste for the remark to McConnell himself.
Trump's remark was directed at the Senate's inability to pass a healthcare reform bill. The GOP has promised for years to repeal and replace Obamacare, but lawmakers have been unable to do so during the first 200-plus days of Trump's presidency.
