President Donald Trump is considering sending current national security adviser H.R. McMaster to Afghanistan to command U.S. forces there, The New York Times reports.

If Trump pulls the trigger, the assignment would earn the general a fourth star, The Times reports.

The move would coincide with making current CIA Director Mike Pompeo the new national security adviser to head up the National Security Council, according to the newspaper.

Pompeo would be Trump's third national security adviser; McMaster replaced Michael Flynn who lasted just 24 days, setting a record for fewest days served in the role.

Trump is unhappy with what he sees as the country's losing effort in Afghanistan, reportedly wanting to fire Gen. John Nicholson, the current commander of U.S.-led forces in the war-torn country.

Further, the move would put some distance between Trump and McMaster; the pair have reportedly not seen eye-to-eye the past few months. McMaster's name has previously come up as someone Trump was considering replacing.
