President Donald Trump continued his attack on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, hitting it late Wednesday and early Thursday on Twitter as a "Witch Hunt" that will be "studied for years." and "an investigation in search of a crime" that he fears might "go on forever."
"So much happening with the now discredited Witch Hunt," he posted Wednesday night. "This total Hoax will be studied for years!"
The probe has been heating up all week, including with Mueller's team accusing one-time Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of lying and breaking his plea arrangement with federal officials.
In an interview with The New York Post Wednesday, Trump would not take pardoning Manafort off the table, and vowed he would declassify FISA warrant applications and other documents if House Democrats start investigations into his administration next year.
Incoming House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff has said he wants to examine whether the House’s probe into Trump's campaign ties to Russia was incomplete, and the House Oversight Committee has plans to investigate Trump's role in paying Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, who alleged they had affairs with Trump but said they were paid off to keep quiet.
Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz earlier this week urged Trump's legal team to be ready to release a report of its own, as he believes Mueller's report will come out before Christmas.
On Thursday, he continued his assault on the probe:
"Did you ever see an investigation more in search of a crime? At the same time Mueller and the Angry Democrats aren’t even looking at the atrocious, and perhaps subversive, crimes that were committed by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the Democrats," he said on Twitter. "A total disgrace!"
He followed up minutes later with another post, invoking the Joseph McCarthy hunt for communists in the early 1950s:
"When will this illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt, one that has shattered so many innocent lives, ever end-or will it just go on forever? After wasting more than $40,000,000 (is that possible?), it has proven only one thing-there was NO Collusion with Russia. So Ridiculous!"
