Despite his assertions last week that he had forgiven $45 million in loans he made to his campaign,
NBC News is reporting that Donald Trump has not done so.
NBC News reports that the FEC has no record of that happening and Trump is refusing to release proof to support his claims that the $45 million has been reclassified as candidate donations.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks told NBC News that the paperwork "will be filed with the next regularly scheduled FEC report," which is July 20.
At stake is new fundraising and what Trump intends to do with it. He is allowed by law to reimburse himself, but top GOP donors wanted assurances from the Republican nominee that he wouldn't use their money to pay back monies spent on the primary. Donors want their money being spent on operations to defeat Hillary Clinton in the general.
