President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that The New York Times wrote the anonymous column that described a “resistance” within the Trump administration.

“The media is very, very dishonest ― beyond anything that anybody can understand,” Trump said in a wide-ranging interview on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends.” “Even the letter written to the Times, there is a chance ― I don’t say it’s a big chance ― but there is a very good chance that that was written by the Times.

“I wouldn’t be that surprised ’cause the Times is totally corrupt and dishonest,” he continued. “I wouldn’t be that surprised. What they write is so, so ― forget it.”

The article, which was published on Sept. 5, claimed that the author was a senior administration official and that they were working with others to undermine certain parts of Trump’s agenda, and to suppress “his worst inclinations.”

Trump demanded that the Justice Department investigate the identity of the author, but suggested on Thursday that there is no plan for the department to do so.

“How do you do that? I would like to, I would like to go in there, and I’d like to find out who it is,” he said. “It could have been The New York Times writer, to be honest. They’re a very dishonest paper. ... Probably wasn’t, but it could have been The New York Times.”
