President Donald Trump on Wednesday turned up the heat on Vice President Mike Pence to decertify the results of the presidential election at a joint session of Congress.
At a rally on the Ellipse, just south of the White House — and an hour before the count of Electoral College votes was to begin in Congress — Trump intensified his urging for Pence to discount the votes that resulted in a win for Democrat Joe Biden.
"If Mike Pence does the right thing, we win the election," Trump told thousands of supporters at the rally.
"All Vice President Pence has to do is send it back to the states to recertify and we become president and you are the happiest people," Trump said, repeating assertions he has made several times in recent days.
Pence reportedly told Trump during their weekly lunch in the West Wing on Tuesday that he did not believe he had the power to unilaterally overturn electoral votes.
But Trump told rally participants that he'd spoken with Pence on Wednesday morning to urge him to act once again.
"I said, Mike, that doesn't take courage," he said. "What takes courage is to do nothing."
If that happens, he continued, the nation will be "stuck with a president who lost the election by a lot, and we have to live with that for the next four years. We're not going to let that happen."
Trump made his remarks at the "Save America March," which was packed with Trump supporters wearing red baseball caps and cheering as Trump ticked off problems with the Nov. 3 election.
Trump repeated his stand that he will not give up, vowing to "stop the steal."
"You don't concede when there's theft involved," Trump said. "Our country has had enough and we will not take it anymore."
