President Donald Trump said Friday that he agreed with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that no special prosecutor was needed for the Russian probe because it's already under investigation by Congress.
"You have it before the House," Trump told Jeanine Pirro on Fox News in an interview to be aired on Saturday. "You have it before the Senate."
Separate inquiries are being conducted by the intelligence committees of both chambers.
CNN reported Friday that Rosenstein had said that no special counsel was needed.
"I know some of those people – and they are highly ethical people," President Trump said.
"Let them just do it.
"They have done it for a long time."
But Pirro suggested that "they may never be finished. How do you prove you weren't involved?"
"I think it is proved already," Trump responded. "And, to be honest with you, I want it to be accurate, also.
"I want them to devote the time they need. I'd like it to go fast. That's important to me.
"But more important than speed," he said, "I want them to be sure that Russia or anybody else – that if it did happen – and everybody agrees that it didn't change the election."
