President Donald Trump and Rep. Adam Schiff argued on Twitter Saturday before the Nevada caucuses over reports U.S. officials believe Russia is helping Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign.
“Democrats in the Great State of Nevada (Which, because of the Economy, Jobs, the Military & Vets, I will win in November), be careful of Russia, Russia, Russia,” the president tweeted Saturday. “According to Corrupt politician Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, they are pushing for Crazy Bernie Sanders to win. Vote!”
Schiff, D-Calif., denied that he'd said Russia was pushing for Sanders, and accused the president of not standing up against foreign election interference.
“Mr. President, I didn’t say that,” Schiff tweeted. “But if you wish to quote me, quote this: ‘The only thing Americans despise more than foreign actors trying to affect the vote is a president unwilling to do anything to stop it.’ Americans decide American elections.”
The Washington Post reported Friday that Russia is trying to interfere on Sanders' behalf, which he disavowed in a statement saying that he doesn't care who Russia President Vladimir Putin wants to win, and said he wanted to tell Putin to "stay out of American elections, and as president, I will make sure that you do.”
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported Thursday that intelligence officials told lawmakers during a classified briefing that Russia is already meddling with elections to get Trump reelected.
Sanders slammed Trump over the growing Russian controversy.
“Unlike Donald Trump, I do not consider Vladimir Putin a good friend,” Sanders said. “He is an autocratic thug who is attempting to destroy democracy and crush dissent in Russia.”
