President Donald Trump signed several executive orders a short time after he was sworn in Friday.

One of them authorized retired Gen. James Mattis to serve as secretary of defense, should his nomination be confirmed. Mattis has only been out of the military for three years, short of the required seven years for someone to serve in the civilian position. Trump's order overwrites that rule.

Trump also signed orders that officially nominated his Cabinet picks, none of which have been confirmed by Congress.

And he signed an order that declares a National Day of Patriotism, although it was unclear which day on the calendar that will be.

The Washington Post published a clip of Trump signing the orders.
