President Donald Trump on Wednesday ripped Democrats on Twitter for attacking the Senate's healthcare bill for cutting funds for Medicaid, arguing that support "actually goes up."
Trump's tweet included a chart from the Congressional Budget Office's report on the proposed legislation:
The Republican healthcare plan rolls back the future growth of Medicaid, the program created in 1965 to serve the nation's poorest residents – including children, seniors and people with disabilities.
The CBO report estimated Monday that federal support to Medicaid would be cut by $772 billion over a decade.
In 2026, 15 million fewer people would be covered through Medicaid.
Overall, the nonpartisan CBO estimated that 22 million more Americans will be left without healthcare insurance in 2026 than under Obamacare.
Under the House version of the plan, which was passed last month, Medicaid funding would be reduced by $834 billion over 10 years.
The proposed Medicaid cuts in the Senate plan have also come under attack by Republicans – and nine members of the chamber have said they would not support the plan, leading Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Tuesday to pull the legislation from a floor vote.
