Donald Trump Saturday launched into a Twitter attack against GOP rival Ted Cruz, posting a series of tweets that questioned the Texas senator's character, the matter of his bank loans from Goldman Sachs and Citibank, and declaring the Tea Party favorite is a "natural-born Canadian," before topping it all off with a large photo of the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks.

"Is this the New York that Ted Cruz is taking about & demeaning?" Trump tweeted, with this photograph:

Trump's tweetstorm came just two days after the two men squared off at Thursday night's debate, and after Cruz had said Trump embodies  "New York values," an accusation that Trump leans liberal on many issues.

Trump started his barrage of tweets at about 6:30 a.m., reports Business Insider, and stretched throughout the morning, and were likely in response to a Friday New York Times report saying Cruz had written a letter  on Thursday to federal election officials to tell them his loan disclosures were "inadvertently omitted."

"Ted Cruz said he 'didn't know' that he was a Canadian Citizen," Trump said in just one of the barbed tweets. "He also FORGOT to file his Goldman Sachs Million $ loan papers. Not believable."

He also ridiculed Cruz for making a "wiseguy apology" to New Yorkers after questioning Trump's "New York values." In his apology, Cruz said he was sorry that liberal policies had affected the city's residents.

Trump's tweets flew fast until about noon, and then after a break started again, and included him calling his Texas rival for the GOP presidential nomination a hypocrite in at least two of the messages. Some of the flaming salvos went as follows:

Cruz's camp, meanwhile, aimed a shot of its own at Trump Saturday morning, posting a video clip of Trump talking about New York values:

And later in the day, Cruz ridiculed Trump to reporters before a national security forum in Fort Mill, South Carolina, reports The Texas Tribune, saying the barrage of attacks came after new poll numbers came out showing that he was ahead of the Trump in the race.

The new numbers, Cruz said, have "got to drive him nuts" and sent him out of bed "tweeting and tweeting.'

"I think in terms of a commander in chief, we ought to have someone who isn’t springing out of bed to tweet in a frantic response to the latest polls," said Cruz. "I think the American people is looking for a commander in chief who is stable and steady and a calm hand to keep this country safe."
