President Donald Trump took Democrats to task early Tuesday for tweeting photos from 2014 showing immigrant children being kept in steel cages after having been detained at the southern border and linking the images to his current immigration policy.

"Democrats mistakenly tweet 2014 pictures from Obama’s term showing children from the Border in steel cages," Trump tweeted. "They thought it was recent pictures in order to make us look bad, but backfires. Dems must agree to Wall and new Border Protection for good of country...Bipartisan Bill!"

Over the weekend, a group of photographs posted by the Arizona Republic quickly went viral until it was pointed out that the pictures had been taken in 2014, while President Barack Obama was still in office.

The nearly four-year-old photographs were linked to reports that Homeland Security had lost track of nearly 1,500 migrant children last year.

That story began after Department of Health and Human Services official Steven Wagner testified during a Senate committee hearing late last month that the federal agency had lost track of 1,475 children who had crossed the border with Mexico, unaccompanied by adults, and who were subsequently were placed with adult sponsors in the U.S.

The newspaper itself has tweeted that the photographs are not current.

"Photos of children at a migrant holding facility have gone viral on social media," the paper tweeted Sunday. "The pictures are from 2014. They were originally posted with this azcentral article about unaccompanied migrant children who were transported to a facility in Arizona."

Many people who posted the 2014 photographs — some of which showed row after row of children covered in silver foil-like blankets — pulled down their tweets, while others left them intact.

However, former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, who pulled down his tweet linking the pictures to Trump still took a slam at the current administration with his correction.

"These awful pictures are from 2014, when the government's challenge was reconnecting unaccompanied minors who showed up at the border with family or a safe sponsor," he wrote. "Today, in 2018, the government is CREATING unaccompanied minors by tearing them away from family at the border."
