The White House acknowledged that officials directed the transcript of a call between President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine's leader, to be filed in a highly classified computer system, CNN is reporting.
A senior White House official, in a statement provided to the news network, said National Security Council attorneys had directed the placing of the transcript in the system.
"NSC lawyers directed that the classified document be handled appropriately," the senior White House official said.
Administration officials maintain the transcript was already classified and they did nothing wrong by moving it.
A whistleblower's complaint released Thursday morning claimed the White House tried to "lock down' the information to cover it up, in part by moving it to a different computer system.
The call between the two leaders has sparked an impeachment inquiry. During Trump's conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart, he suggested Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.
