President Donald Trump has shown “real flexibility” for someone who’s “not always that flexible” on the issue of illegal immigration and border security, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said Sunday.
In remarks on “Fox News Sunday,” Blunt praised Trump’s changing view of border issues as he collects more information.
“The president showed real flexibility here for a guy that's not always that flexible,” he said. “He has changed his view of this as he's gotten more information about how you secure the border, about ways to do that. We have consistently said that barriers were part of that.”
“The president went from talking about a wall along the entire southern border at one point during the campaign as part of the campaign discussion, to ‘let us have barriers where they work and have something else where barriers wouldn't work as well,’” he continued.
“[House] Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi [D-Calif.] has been for barriers in the past,” he added. “The idea that somehow 650 or 700 miles of barriers are appropriate, but 702 miles are immoral is an incredibly interesting place to draw your line about what is moral and what is not moral. I think this debate got way too political. I do think the president has shown more room and willingness to move so far than others have.”
