President Donald Trump on Friday warned of a “very serious attack” on the Second Amendment after Virginia Democrats curtailed access for firearms in Richmond.

“Your 2nd Amendment is under very serious attack in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia,” Trump tweeted. "That’s what happens when you vote for Democrats, they will take your guns away. Republicans will win Virginia in 2020. Thank you Dems!”

The slap referred to a ban on firearms by Virginia state legislators at the state capitol, and Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam’s declaration of a state of emergency to temporarily ban anyone from carrying a weapon on its grounds.

The crackdown comes ahead of a pro-gun rights rally on Monday that’s expected to draw big crowds on both sides of the issue — and being the potential for clashes both ideological and physical.

In his statement, Northam cited credible “threats of violence” surrounding the demonstration that included “extremist rhetoric” akin to that at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in 2017 in which one counter-protester was killed, The Hill reported.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League, which organized the rally in Richmond, says it expects more than 5,000 people to attend.

"We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials," said Northam, The Hill reported. "But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe."

Virginia Democrats, who won total control of state government last year for the first time since 1994, are eyeing several gun control measures. Among the reforms are a ban on assault weapons and a "red flag" law that would permit law enforcement to remove guns from those deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others, The Hill reported.
