President Donald Trump slammed congressional Democrats for not supporting a payroll tax cut in the next phase of coronavirus relief legislation.

His comments came in a Thursday tweet.

The president wrote: “The Democrats have stated strongly that they won’t approve a Payroll Tax Cut (too bad!). It would be great for workers. The Republicans, therefore, didn’t want to ask for it. Dems, as usual, are hurting the working men and women of our Country!”

The Washington Post said while Trump attempted to blame Democrats, it was actually Republicans who shot the idea down.

The newspaper said Trump had been insisting that the payroll tax cut be included, but Senate Republicans refused. It said the White House acknowledged defeat on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Post noted Senate Republicans have failed to reach agreement with the White House on a broader coronavirus relief bill.
