Denver Post Poll: Udall, Gardner in Photo-Finish Tie

By    |   Thursday, 30 October 2014 09:11 PM EDT

Colorado's see-saw Senate race between Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Udall and GOP challenger Cory Gardner is finishing in a photo-finish tie, the final Denver Post poll shows ahead of Tuesday's vote.

The latest survey shows Gardner at 46 percent and Udall with 44 percent — an edge that falls within the plus or minus 4 percentage point margin of error.

Five percent support a third-party candidate, and 5 percent are still undecided, the SurveyUSA poll finds.

A Real Clear Politics average of polls reflects just how close the key race is, giving Gardner a 3.6 point advantage in a race the politics site rates as a "toss-up."

The Post's earlier SurveyUSA poll on Sept. 11 showed Udall with a 4-point lead, 46 percent to 44 percent, but the race flipped by the Oct. 13 survey, which showed Gardner with a 2-point advantage.

The latest poll throws a bone to both sides, the newspaper reports.

For Gardner's supporters, the survey shows a 3-point lead among those who said they already voted, "a reflection of early Republican energy surrounding the election," the newspaper reports.

Gardner also leads with voters aged 35 to 49 as well as seniors, and with independent voters by seven points, "a key indicator in the state where one-third of the voters are registered as unaffiliated," the Post reports.

For Udall supporters, the survey shows the incumbent's advantage among Latino voters is 3 points and 6 points among women, though "based on past elections, Democrats expect both margins to grow significantly."
