Rep. Upton: Sebelius Will Face 'Pretty Tough Grilling'

By    |   Wednesday, 23 October 2013 02:22 PM EDT

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius can look forward to a "pretty tough grilling" on the troubled Obamacare rollout in her expected appearance before the House Energy and Commerce Committee next week, says chairman Fred Upton.

"I would’ve guessed that someone would’ve told her from the start that this is not going to be going well," the Michigan Republican told Detroit’s WJR Radio.

Upton told the radio station the White House should have accepted the recommendation of House Republicans that the Obamacare launch be delayed at least a year.

"If you harken back to this last summer, when the administration saw there were a number of glitches, they offered waivers, they offered delays," he said. "They knew all this. They should’ve taken us up on the offer. It’s not ready for prime time."

Computer and other tech contractors who worked on the healthcare.gov website are scheduled to appear before Upton's panel Thursday. He said questions for them will include, "When did they know that it was going to be so poorly run? What answers do they have? Did they alert the administration that there were troubles early on?"
