Patrick Kennedy: Trump's 'Crazy' Comment Dehumanizes the Mentally Ill

Monday, 26 October 2015 03:26 PM EDT

Former Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was out of line when he responded to a question about mass shootings by calling people with mental illness "crazy."

Trump made the comments Monday during an appearance on NBC's "Today" show.

He blamed mass shootings on what he called a "huge mental health problem" in the country and said states had been letting people out of mental institutions to save money. When asked if guns were to blame, Trump replied there was already tremendous regulation on guns and that, "These people are all, to put it mildly, they're crazy."

Kennedy is an advocate for better mental health care. He says the word "crazy" is akin to the word "retarded" or "the N-word." He says it dehumanizes those with mental illness.
