A spokeswoman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee says her group plans to reserve $1 million worth of television advertising time in South Dakota.
Committee spokeswoman Brook Hougesen said Saturday that the funding is meant to back former Republican Gov. Mike Rounds in his bid for the state's open U.S. Senate seat.
The move comes after the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced plans this week to spend $1 million in support of Democratic candidate Rick Weiland.
Rounds has been heavily favored in the contest, but the race has grown tighter as Nov. 4 approaches. It also includes former GOP U.S. Sen. Larry Pressler and independent candidate Gordon Howie.
Hougesen said the Republican committee bought $750,000 in airtime Friday and plans to buy more. The ads will begin airing Tuesday.
