Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh told a leading Republican lawmaker Monday that the woman who alleged he sexually assaulted her 36 years ago has the wrong guy.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, spoke with CNN and revealed some details of a phone conversation he had with Kavanaugh on Monday. A woman has come forward via a letter to say that Kavanaugh, currently a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals, assaulted her when they were both in high school.
"Well, he didn't do that, and he wasn't at the party. So, you know, clearly, somebody's mixed up," Hatch said when asked what Kavanaugh said to him.
"I'd say he's upset. But he handled it well. He's a very strong, decent man."
Hatch went on to say that the accuser is wrong about Kavanaugh.
"Well, I think she's mistaken," he said.
President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended Kavanaugh and blasted the timing of the letter's release. Democrats are calling for an investigation before the Senate Judiciary Committee votes on Kavanaugh's nomination.
