Arizona Sen. John McCain says President Barack Obama appears to be more interested in politics than in getting to the bottom of the VA scandal.
Appearing Thursday on Fox News Channel's
"Your World with Neil Cavuto," McCain noted that Obama sent Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors to Phoenix to look into the scandal.
"He didn't send an expert on healthcare. He didn't send a veteran that really knows about healthcare," McCain said. "He sent one of his chief political operatives, showing what he views this crisis as, and what it really is."
Obama does not understand the depth of anger veterans and their families are feeling, McCain said. "Otherwise, I think, he'd be acting far more proactive."
The growing scandal was first uncovered when a former doctor at the Phoenix VA hospital told CNN that secret waiting lists were being kept to hide the fact that veterans were having to wait for weeks and months to see doctors. VA guidelines call for wait times of under 14 days.
The VA has admitted that 23 veterans died waiting for care, but media reports across the country suggest that number may climb.
Critics have said Obama didn’t appear angry at
his Wednesday press conference, but McCain said the breakdown of one of America's most sacred obligations is something "that deserves to be excited about."
