Wendy Davis Gets Fundraising Boost from Elizabeth Warren

By    |   Saturday, 21 December 2013 08:28 PM EST

Texas Sen. Wendy Davis continues to get a boost from supporters outside the state for her longshot gubernatorial bid — this time from Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Warren sent out a fundraising email early Saturday, The Huffington Post reports.

"Our champion Wendy is running for governor of Texas," Warren said in the email. "She's not afraid of a tough fight, and neither are we."

The query seeks contributions of at least $5 to help Davis reach a $500,000 fundraising goal by Dec. 31. So far, she has raised more than $1.2 million, most of which came as the result of her 11-hour filibuster in Austin against strict abortion limits.  The bill eventually passed the Texas Legislature.

Davis is squaring off against Republican Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who so far has raised more than $25 million, to succeed GOP Gov. Rick Perry.

Experts say that Davis and the groups supporting her would need to raise at least $40 million to be competitive with Abbott, Fox News reports.

Democrats have not won more than 42 percent of the vote in the last three elections. The last Democrat elected to the Statehouse was Ann Richards, who served from 1991 to 1995.

Warren is the latest Davis supporter from outside the Lone Star State.

Last month, two groups outside Texas held a fundraiser for Davis in Washington. They were the Lone Star Project, a research organization run by Democratic strategist Matt Angle that provides Davis with strategic and message support, and Battleground Texas, a group headed by former aides of President Barack Obama.

In addition, Emily's List, a group that promotes Democratic women who support abortion rights, also has provided Davis' campaign with staffing and other assistance.

"The GOP knows that Wendy Davis is special, and they are scared that her victory in 2014 could turn the tide against Republican victories in Texas," Warren said in the email. "National Republicans have already dumped an astonishing $21 million into her opponent's campaign war chest."

Warren referenced her own campaign against Republican Scott Brown last year.

"When I decided to run for the Senate, Scott Brown already had a $10 million in the bank, and Wall Street was ready to spend bazillions more to help him," she said. "Lots of people said we couldn't win.

"But we outraised him, we out-worked him, and last November we won thanks to your incredible grassroots support."

A Nov. 4 University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll showed Abbott leading Davis 40 percent to 34 percent.
