The summer departures of Reince Priebus and Steve Bannon from the White House have left a void for Republican lawmakers, struggling with who exactly they should be liaising with in the Oval Office, The Hill reported.
President Donald Trump's former chief of staff and chief strategist were the go-to guys in the White House for lawmakers on conservative issues, and with new chief of staff John Kelly trying to restore order to the Oval Office, Republicans are craving for someone to talk to in President Donald Trump's administration.
“There is great respect for John Kelly, but no real belief that anyone else can effectively carry out the Trump agenda until Kelly replaces Bannon with a conservative leader," one House GOP lawmaker told The Hill.
The rumor mill of replacements for Bannon include former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Heritage Foundation head and senator Jim DeMint and former Freedom Caucus head Jim Jordan, The Hill reported.
The vacuum left by Priebus and Bannon comes at a critical time for Trump and congressional leadership. Trump this week starts his road show to pump up tax reform, and it's the next big target for Republicans to hit the bull's-eye when they return from August recess.
