Steve Bannon's controversial comments included in a new tell-all book about the Trump administration cost him any chance of returning to the White House, a spokesman said Monday.

Deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told reporters on Air Force One Bannon's derogatory remarks about President Donald Trump, members of his family, and his presidency as a whole were damaging.

"I don't believe there is any way back for Mr. Bannon at this point," White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said, according to The Washington Times. "It is very obvious Mr. Bannon worked with [author Michael] Wolff in this particular book."

Wolff's book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" was released Friday. It frames the early days of the Trump administration as chaotic, and Bannon is quoted several times bashing Trump.

Gidley said, "The president has been very clear on his thoughts. It is very obvious the book is false and fake.

"When you go after somebody's family in the matter which [Bannon] did, two of the president's children are serving this nation, sacrificing in their service, it is repugnant, it is grotesque, and I challenge anybody to go and talk about somebody's family and see if that person doesn't come back and comes back hard."

Bannon addressed his remarks on Sunday, saying, in part, "Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around. My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda — as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."
