Rep. Will Hurd: Nunes' Memo Does Not Vindicate Trump

By    |   Sunday, 04 February 2018 10:30 AM EST

Rep. Will Hurd on Sunday discounted President Donald Trump’s declaration that he’s vindicated by a GOP memo alleging surveillance abuses by the FBI.

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” the Texas Republican also criticized his colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee depiction of the contentious memo.

Asked if he believes the memo vindicates Trump, as the president has tweeted, Hurd replied: “I don’t.”

“I don’t agree with some of my colleagues that say, you know, it was, always using the words explosive,” he added. “I’m not shocked that elected officials are using hyperbole and exaggerations.”

He also asserted he doesn’t believe the document is an attack on Russia investigation special counsel Robert Mueller.

“I want to stress, Bob Mueller should be allowed to turn over every rock, pursue every lead so that we can have trust in knowing what actually the Russians did or did not do,” Hurd said.

“I don’t believe this is an attack on Bob Mueller, I don’t believe this is an attack on the men and women in the FBI…What this is about is…should unverified information be able to be used to spy on an American.”

Hurd staunchly defended the decision by the House panel to not release a Democrat memo rebutting the majority’s document.

“There was information in [the Democrat’s memo] that I did believe led to erosion of national security…the information wasn’t ready to go, and so we decided to release ours.”
