Democrats and legal eagles took to Twitter to denounce what was called the "naked abuse of power" from Attorney General William Barr, who issued a letter saying U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman has been fired by President Donald Trump.

Berman was leading investigations into President Donald Trump's legal counsel, Rudy Giuliani. He was also part of a probe that put Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen behind bars.

News broke Friday that Berman was resigning from his position. The only problem was Berman said he has no plans of stepping down.

The SDNY investigations have led to several indictments surrounding Trump, including Cohen, who was charged with campaign finance violations, as well as two associates to Giuliani, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., tweeted:

"This is a naked abuse of power. I've already called for AG William Barr to resign & for Congress to impeach him. Congress should pass my bill now to defund Barr's authority to interfere with matters related to Trump, his family, & his campaign."

Walter Schaub, former Director of U.S. Office of Government Ethics tweeted:

"Barr is going to need to be the subject of a criminal investigation. But first Congress needs to impeach him. The inquiry should begin Monday. There is no excuse for not doing it."

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif,. tweeted:

"Make no mistake — Bill Barr will go down in history as having aided and abetted the most corrupt president this country has ever seen."

Preet Bharara, a former attorney for the Southern District of New York tweeted:

"Why does a president get rid of his own hand-picked US Attorney in SDNY on a Friday night, less than 5 months before the election?"
