Gingrich: Trump's Wiretap Claims Only Crazy 'If You're a Left-Winger'

Fox News' "America's Newsroom"

It is reasonable to believe President Donald Trump's claim President Barack Obama was behind wiretapping Trump Tower is crazy — "if you're a left-winger and believe everything Trump does is wrong," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.

"If you look at the process of the leaks, by the way, all breaking the law, and calling on IRS agents to break the law and leak President Trump's taxes, the left has gone crazy since the election," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" anchor Bill Hemmer.

"There's a whole model that anything goes on the left, and [they] want the rest of us to believe they're reasonable."

Meanwhile, it is not a theory, but a fact someone broke the law and leaked information about a wiretap involving an American citizen, and "that's a felony," Gingrich said.

"Somebody out there is committing a felony," the former speaker said. "It's a fact some of the people that they picked up on wiretaps were in the Trump Towers and Trump campaign."

The New York Times and The Washington Post "grossly smeared" Attorney General Jeff Sessions through the use of anonymous sources, Gingrich continued.

He also slammed Trump opponents such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Claire McCaskill for "still fighting against Trump and using whatever excuse they can and piously saying, 'gee, what's your evidence' when it comes to Trump's statements on wiretapping."

Gingrich pointed to a National Review column by Andrew McCarthy, and questioned why the White House would change rules in January so "unsubstantiated rumors could be circulated in the intelligence community, knowing they will be leaked."

"He said there was an effort in June to get a foreign court order to go after parts of the Trump team," Gingrich said of the McCarthy column. "It was turned down. They came back, he claims, in October. McCarthy's a serious person. He's not just a political partisan."
