President Joe Biden is planning to keep Christopher Wray as FBI Director, CNBC and other media outlets reported Thursday.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki was asked on Wednesday if Biden had confidence in Wray and said she had not spoken to the newly elected president about the matter.

Wray, appointed by President Donald Trump in 2017, has six years left in his term.

The FBI is conducting a probe of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Trump picked Wray for the job after firing James Comey.

Trump considered firing Wray at various points in his term over numerous issues.

Hunter Biden, the president’s son, is under federal investigation for his dealings with Chinese businesses, officials said in December. The president has pledged not to meddle in the investigation and keeping Wray in place is one way to show he’s allowing the probe to progress unfettered.

Firing Wray also would likely have caused an enormous controversy early in Biden’s presidency, similar to the consequences that followed Trump’s firing of Comey.  Comey’s removal led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate the Russia allegations.
