In an interview scheduled to be aired Friday, a former stripper tells Barbara Walters that Hanssen lavished her with gifts to bring her closer to God.
Speaking for the first time on television, Priscilla Sue Galey, now living in Columbus, Ohio, tells "20/20" anchor Walters that their relationship was strictly platonic. She says the devout Catholic - married with six children - "seemed like the type of man who could do no wrong."
Hanssen was arrested in February and charged with spying for Moscow. He was indicted Wednesday in Alexandria, Va., on 21 counts related to his alleged espionage activities.
The FBI says Hanssen allegedly received $600,000 from the Russians in cash and jewels to betray some of the most sensitive U.S. secrets. Moscow was allegedly holding another $800,000 in cash for Hanssen overseas.
After a year of cash, trips and gifts that included a Mercedes Benz, Galey, now 43, says she had a falling out with Hanssen over misuse of a credit card.
Despite Hanssen's generosity, Galey insists she would never have helped him with his alleged espionage. She says if he had asked her to spy, "I would have said I'm sorry, no. But he never did. And that's exactly why I'm thanking God today, yes, 'cause he could have done something and I would have ended up dead or in trouble."
Galey also describes how she met Hanssen in 1990 after her performance at a Washington strip club near FBI Headquarters. "He had sent a $10 tip with one of the waitresses back to the dressing room after my set, with the most beautiful compliment I had ever heard in my entire life," Galey says. "Something to the effect of he had never expected to see such grace and beauty in a strip club."
She tells Walters that at their second meeting, Hanssen gave her a diamond and sapphire necklace. "I thought he was just extremely rich or extremely generous," she says. "He said he had a large inheritance, and that he would really like for me to have this; it was beautiful and I should have it."
Galey says Hanssen never so much as put an arm around her.
The former stripper describes "the lunch that changed my life," when Hanssen handed her an envelope with some cash, her own American Express Card and the keys to a Mercedes Benz. "I looked out my apartment for two weeks after I got it home, just to see if it was still there," she says. Hanssen once told her he'd spent close to $80,000 on her.
Galey tells Walters she was devastated when she learned that Hanssen had been arrested for spying. "I just about died," she says. "I was very disappointed and devastated. I thought it had been a huge mistake. Had to be a mistake!"
According to Galey, her relationship with Hanssen ended after he accused her of abusing the credit card he had given her. She tells Walters that when she returned to Columbus she became addicted to drugs, resorted to prostitution and spent a year in prison for selling drugs.
She now lives in a run-down Columbus neighborhood with her mother and 3-year-old son.
"20/20" airs from 10-11 p.m. EDT Friday on ABC.
