"Spontaneous" demonstrations led by senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, and Elizabeth Warren broke out almost before President Trump could finish his introduction of Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh, foreshadowing what may be the toughest confirmation battle Washington has seen in over a decade.

Unlike other recent Supreme Court nominations, however, this one involves the replacement of swing-vote Justice Anthony Kennedy with a staunch conservative — a switch that could alter the court's ideological balance for a generation.
