Since the left, and its avatar Barack Obama, lost the case before the before the Supreme Court that would have forced the owners of Hobby Lobby to violate their religious beliefs, the left’s fallback position has been to smear the owners of Hobby Lobby and characterize the case as one where Hobby Lobby refused to provide contraceptive coverage for its employees.
Here’s just a sampling of the headlines regarding the case:
- The Hill: Supreme Court rejects Obama, limits birth control mandate
- Politico: SCOTUS sides with Hobby Lobby on birth control
- Wall Street Journal: Hobby Lobby Backers Cheer Contraception-Challenge Victory
- CNN: Supreme Court rules against Obama in contraception case
- New York Times: Supreme Court Rejects Contraceptives Mandate for Some Corporations
These headlines all have one thing in common: They are bald-faced lies.
Hobby Lobby offers contraceptive coverage as part of the health insurance provided for its employees. (Incidentally, Hobby Lobby offered coverage to its retail employees before Obamacare was passed, because it is a well-run, employee-oriented company.)
Before and after the Supreme Court ruling women who work for Hobby Lobby will have unimpeded (well, as unimpeded as anything is under the Obamacare regime) access to birth control.
There is no Hobby Lobby "war on women" or even a "skirmish on women."
What female employees will not have access to, and what the court case was all about, is company-paid abortion. The owners of Hobby Lobby are not Catholic so they have no religious objection to birth control; what they do object to is birth termination.
If an employee decides to abort a pregnancy that is their decision, but Hobby Lobby objects to paying for the abortion on religious, pro-life grounds.
The reporters covering the case know this and the exclusion of this information is intentional. Putting the facts of the case in context does not support the left’s propaganda, so inconvenient facts are left out. The distortions are so bad that neither The Hill story nor The Washington Post story even mentioned the word "abortion."
Think how much different the headlines would have been if the mainstream media told the truth:
- The Hill: Supreme Court rejects Obama, limits abortion mandate
- Politico: SCOTUS sides with Hobby Lobby on abortion
- New York Times: Supreme Court Rejects Abortion Mandate for Some Corporations
Accuracy puts the ruling in a completely different light and the truth aligns the ruling with the views of the vast majority of American voters.
The American people are opposed to taxpayer-funded abortions and they are equally opposed to forcing people that object to abortion on religious grounds to pay for killing an infant. And when the people have access to all the facts, they support Hobby Lobby.
The owners of Hobby Lobby have nothing to be ashamed of in connection with this historic case.
The same can’t be said for the news media.
