Donald Trump, Bridge Builder
I saw Donald Trump out in Southampton this past weekend.
He looked in prime shape, like a boxer ready to go into the ring.
Reading reports about Donald Trump’s trip to Capitol Hill last week, things didn't go well between the billionaire presumptive nominee and some members of his own party.
Trump has been an amazing builder and businessman over several decades.
He has also proven himself a fairly amazing political figure, in short order.
There is a sense among some he wants to go it alone and Trump even has said he is fighting "two parties" to win the presidency.
Perhaps.
But my feeling from what I hear from many anti-Trumpers is that they actually want to support him, but he has not made them comfortable with his actions so far.
I have seen Trump up close and personal for many years.
Despite the public persona, he can be quite a peacemaker and "bridge-builder" — when he wants to be.
Important for him now is to start naming names of key advisory teams, people well respected by other GOPers.
So far Trump's advisory teams seems either non-existent, farm team players or a hodgepodge of something or another.
Larry Kudlow and Stephen Moore are exceptions — brilliant economists and Trump supporters, as they are.
But Trump needs people of their caliber across the major policy areas of government. Soon.
Roger Ailes and Allegations
Former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson lawsuit alleging Roger Ailes, the influential network chairman, sexually harassed her, simply doesn’t seem right.
Fox has responded by noting that Carlson had a legal agreement with the network to first go through confidential arbitration on such matters.
Instead, Carlson has sought to bypass that agreement by going public in an apparent effort to embarrass Ailes.
If she had not been satisfied by the arbitration process, I suppose it would have been fair to go public.
So why not wait?
On her heels, and quite quickly, press reports have other women making harassment allegations against Ailes.
Interesting all of this is percolating in the middle of the most important election in modern times.
I am not saying the allegations have a political angle. But the timing seems suspicious.
Fox News’ parent company is promising an internal review of the allegations. Perhaps now is the time to cool down, stop the "he said, she said" stuff, and wait for the report.
Poll: Why Was Hillary Not Charged?
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll out Monday has some 56 percent of Americans wondering why Hillary Clinton was not charged for mishandling top secret information.
Having watched FBI Director James Comey's press conference last week, it raised more questions about Hillary than it answered.
A number of legal experts, including Newsmax blogger Alan Dershowitz, have been perplexed by why Comey was deciding on whether Hillary should be indicted. Such a decision has always been in a prosecutor’s purview. The FBI is simply an investigatory agency.
Comey also said if anyone else did what Hillary did, they likely would have suffered consequences." He didn't identify the punishments, but the bureau's Hillary decision gives the appearance of unequal justice.
As a nation we have always lived with the ideal that no one is above the law.
After watching Comey, that view clearly has been shaken.
