Cassini Image Prompts Impressive Mosaic of Saturn

By    |   Monday, 21 October 2013 08:54 PM EDT

A Croatian computer programmer has created what scientists are calling an impressive mosaic of Saturn, an image made from a compilation of 36 pictures taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on Oct. 10.

"I try to be measured in my praise for spacecraft images," Emily Lakdawalla wrote on the blog she keeps on The Planetary Society website. "Not every photo can be the greatest space image ever. But this enormous mosaic showing the flattened globe of Saturn floating amongst the complete disk of its rings must surely be counted among the greatest images of the Cassini mission."

The image was created by Gordan Ugarkovic, an amateur image processor from Croatia, Space.com reported. Lakdawalla was the first to see his rendition of the ringed planet on his Flickr stream.

Cassini has been on a mission to orbit Saturn for almost nine years, and has four more years to go before it is to return home in 2017.
