The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, says the first 20 million COVID-19 vaccine doses should go to healthcare workers.
ACIP is working to decide how the vaccine should be allocated.
It lists healthcare workers, other essential workers, adults with high-risk health conditions, and adults aged 65 or older as the four most important groups that should receive the initial vaccine allocation.
But with limited doses, "published frameworks for COVID-19 allocation and ACIP discussions indicate a clear consensus that the first allocation of COVID-19 vaccine supplies should be directed to health care personnel,” the group said in a release.
Three pharmaceutical companies have reported promising vaccine breakthroughs from late-stage trials in the fight against the coronavirus, including AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna.
The results come as COVID-19 cases surge in the U.S. — at least 843 new coronavirus deaths and 141,034 new cases were reported on Nov. 22. Over the past week, there has been an average of 171,376 cases per day, an increase of 54% from the average two weeks earlier. More than 12.3 million in the U.S. have been infected with COVID-19 and at least 256,700 have died.
