Climate Expert: We've Had 18 Years of Flat Temperatures

By    |   Friday, 11 July 2014 04:33 PM EDT

President Barack Obama has called those who question man-made global warming a "fringe" element, but climate expert and University of Houston professor Larry Bell says that global temperatures haven't changed in 18 years.

"We're going on 18 years of flat global temperatures," Bell told J.D. Hayworth and Morgan Thompson on "America's Forum" on Newsmax TV on Friday.

Bell argues that it's "very likely" that the climate will actually get cooler "because the sun spot activity, which is evidence of changes in the magnetic field of the sun, the last time it happened we had the little Ice Age which lasted a few hundred years."

While speaking at a League of Conservation Voters dinner in Washington, Obama cited "communities across the country [that] are struggling with longer wildfire seasons, more severe droughts, heavier rainfall more frequent flooding."

But Bell said that the idea that such things are getting worse is "media-hype."

"We've had actually in the past decade fewer of those than we've had historically," he explained. "From 1910 to 1940 we had a warm period, in fact it was warmer than today and then we had about three decades of cooling until the late 70s' and at that time scientists were predicting the next Ice Age is coming."

"Twelve years later Al Gore had his hearings in Washington and 'oh my God, the earth is on fire and we're doomed and so on and we need to pass the Kyoto protocol and kill carbon,'" Bell added.

"And now we've had a flat period or slightly cooling period since the time before most high school students said they were born."

Bell is a Newsmax columnist and author of the book, "Climate of Corruption: Politics and Power Behind the Global Warming Hoax."
